On April 01, 2025, Mrs. Rose Chundung Ndong, a distinguished geoscientist and industry leader, ascended to the presidency of the Nigeria Mining & Geosciences Society (NMGS), marking a historic milestone in her illustrious career. With decades of experience spanning the mining, petroleum and geosciences sectors, her election as the 33rd President of NMGS is a testament to her exceptional leadership, technical expertise and unwavering commitment to the growth of Nigeria’s extractive industries.
Her journey to the pinnacle of NMGS leadership has been shaped by years of dedication, resilience and groundbreaking contributions to geosciences and mining. From her early days as a budding geoscientist to her most recent role as the executive commissioner for exploration and acreage management at the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Ndong has consistently broken barriers and redefined industry standards.
A Trailblazer in Nigeria’s Extractive Industries
Ndong’s career is a remarkable tapestry woven with significant achievements. She previously served as the acting managing director/CEO of the Nigerian Mining Corporation (NMC), where she played a pivotal role in revitalising Nigeria’s mining sector. Her time at the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) further solidified her reputation as a key figure in the development of Nigeria’s geosciences landscape. In various capacities within the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals, she was instrumental in policy formulation, resource management and fostering partnerships that enhanced Nigeria’s revenue from the solid minerals sector.
Ndong was the pioneer provost of the Nigeria Institute of Mining & Geosciences (NIMGS),Jos. She had the mandate to set it up and, presently, it awaits final approval to become a university of mining.
Her tenure at these institutions has not only contributed to Nigeria’s economic diversification but has also ensured that the private sector remains a vital stakeholder in the extractive industries. Through her work, she has championed investment-friendly policies that safeguard investors’ interests while promoting sustainable exploration and mining practices.
Recognised Excellence in Leadership
Ndong’s exceptional contributions to Nigeria’s energy and mining industries have earned her multiple accolades, including the prestigious Oil & Gas Women in Leadership award at the Nigeria Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition in 2022. This recognition underscores her impact on the oil and gas sector, where she has continuously advocated for inclusivity, innovation and best practices.
Beyond her technical expertise, her leadership style is defined by a deep commitment to mentorship, capacity-building and the empowerment of women in geosciences and mining. She has been a vocal advocate for gender inclusivity in industries traditionally dominated by men, paving the way for a new generation of female geoscientists and mining professionals.
Vision for the Nigeria Mining & Geosciences Society
As the newly elected President of NMGS, Ndong is poised to steer the Society into a new era of growth, collaboration, and scientific advancement. The NMGS, established in 1961, is Nigeria’s foremost professional body for geoscientists, mining engineers and related professionals. Under her leadership, the Society is expected to play a more active role in shaping national policies, fostering research, and ensuring that Nigeria maximises the potential of its mineral resources.
Her presidency comes at a crucial time when Nigeria is seeking to diversify its economy and reduce its dependence on oil. The mining sector is being positioned as a key driver of economic transformation, and NMGS, under Ndong’s leadership, is expected to provide the technical expertise, advocacy, and policy recommendations needed to unlock Nigeria’s mineral wealth.
A central focus of her tenure will be strengthening partnerships between government agencies, private investors and academic institutions to promote research and development in geosciences. She is also expected to advocate for improved mining regulations, increased funding for geological surveys and the adoption of cutting-edge technology in exploration and mineral extraction.
Shaping Future of Nigeria’s Mining & Geosciences Landscape
Ndong’s vast experience in both mining and petroleum regulation gives her a unique perspective on the interconnectedness of Nigeria’s extractive industries. She has consistently emphasised the need for Nigeria to adopt a strategic approach in harnessing its natural resources, balancing economic interests with environmental sustainability.
Under her leadership, NMGS is expected to intensify its role in professional development, offering more training programs, workshops and technical conferences that will equip geoscientists and mining professionals with the latest knowledge and skills. She is also likely to champion initiatives aimed at digitising geological data, improving access to exploration insights and leveraging artificial intelligence for resource management.
Role Model, Mentor
Beyond her institutional contributions, Ndong has been an inspiration to many within and outside the industry. Her journey to the top has been one of determination, perseverance and an unyielding passion for science and development. She has mentored numerous young professionals, helping them navigate the complexities of the geosciences and mining sectors.
As a Fellow of the NMGS (FNMGS), she has consistently upheld the values of professionalism, ethical practice and knowledge-sharing. Her leadership will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact, not just on NMGS, but on Nigeria’s mining and geosciences sectors as a whole.
New Chapter for NMGS
Ndong’s presidency marks the beginning of an exciting chapter for NMGS. As she takes the helm of the prestigious Society, there is great anticipation about the direction she will chart. Her track record suggests that NMGS will play a more influential role in shaping national discourse on mining and geosciences, bridging the gap between research and industry needs and ensuring that Nigeria remains at the forefront of geological advancements.
Her election is a significant milestone not just for NMGS but for the broader geosciences’ community in Nigeria. It is a recognition of her immense contributions, her vision and her ability to lead. With her at the helm, NMGS is set to reach new heights, reinforcing its role as a key player in Nigeria’s economic and scientific development.
As she embarks on this new journey, the expectations are high, but so is the confidence in her ability to deliver. The NMGS community and the broader mining and geosciences sectors look forward to the transformation that her leadership will bring.
Congratulations to Ms. Rose Chundung Ndong FNMGS on this well-deserved achievement!
