This picturesque, conical, Lateritic hill is located in Kwi, a village inhabited by the Birom speaking people in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, North Central Nigeria. Access to this gigantic, natural wonder is accessed through Mararaban Jema’a junction, from where the Geosite is about 5km and about 25km south of the Capital City of Jos. Geologically, the Jos plateau lies within the younger granite province of North Central Nigeria. Half of the area is underlain by rocks of the basement complex of lower Paleozoic to Precambrian ages. The geometrical shape of this majestic edifice is said to represent the weathering of the Cenozoic age basaltic lava flows prevalent in the area. The hill, except for the more resistant lateritic iron capping that shields the topmost part , has been deeply dissected by both wind and water erosion, consequently resulting in that narrow top and broad widening base over a relatively flat lying, sprawling, bare landscape. The scenic aspects of the topography has been correctly described as characterized by flat toped, laterite hills above which rise the alkali younger granite bodies. Though there are several other but smaller conical hills dotting the surrounding area, this one is by far the most imposing. Relatively, the scale of this awe-inspiring, un-vegetated lateritic hill is comparable only to one of the seven wonders of the ancient world – the great pyramid of Giza, in Egypt. While the average height of the Jos Plateau is about 1300m above sea level, the base of the Kwi laterite hill is around 1311 meters above sea level and the top, which we were scared to climb, is estimated at about 1363m above sea level. Among the several interesting features of attraction are the steep sides that have been flushed clean by strong gusts of wind and water erosion supported by the open vast landscape. It should interest potential tourists that the state, Plateau, has a near temperate climate with an approximate mean high temperature of 22oc and a mean minimum low temperature of 18oc though situated in a tropical zone. The concentration of expatriates in the state is largely a testimony of this weather condition. Through the provision of education and recreation services, this Geosite, Like many others in the state and country at large, has the potential to generate employment for tour guides while at the same time swelling the Internally Generated Revenue of the state by attracting both local and foreign tourists. Undoubtedly, a visit to the location by any tourist will for sure, leave a lasting impression not only for its location but also for its raw, majestic appeal. The publisher welcomes entries about exciting geosites from any part of Nigeria. The submission should be of geological or mining origin. It must have a tourism appeal accompanied with site photographs and geographic coordinates in Longitude and Latitude. Write ups should not be more than 400 words long
